Bringing Your Baby Home PDF Print E-mail

Bringing Your Baby Home is a program for couples expecting their first baby or who have a baby under 12 months of age. The program assists couples to build knowledge and  skills to constructively manage the many changes that occur with the birth of a child. The program was developed by Drs John and Julie Gottman and has a very strong research base. Their research found that healthy infant development, good parenting and raising children who are emotionally connected go hand in hand with parents who have a good, satisfied relationship.

"The greatest gift you can give your child is a strong relationship between the two of you." -Dr John Gottman

There are  different models (1 day 2 day or 4 weeknights). Couples participating will have the opportunity to:
  • learn what to expect during the transition to parenthood.
  • learn how to strengthen friendship, intimacy and conflict regulation skills.
  • learn about child development and how to co-parent with your partner.

The motto of the program is: Small things often

"We took part in Bringing Baby Home, and now we've brought baby home.  Doing the course was great for us - we were able to talk openly and honestly with one another about our fears and hopes, and make some very practical plans together that have proved really constructive.  I think that for us, preparing for the changes in our life and our relationship has allowed us to accept them all the more willingly, and it's really helped us put together a tool box of techniques to help us through any difficult times."
Cathy and Matthew

"This is the best thing we have done and we feel very positive about the challenges facing us. We were glad we made the 3 hour round trip. Thankyou"
Peter and Amy

"When we saw the brochure we thought 'why not'? We have done all the other classes and thought this one looked like it would be helpful to our relationship as we really want to enjoy our baby together. We feel very positive."
Shona and Alan
