Currently offered through the Sunshine Family Relationship Centre, Centacare's African Dads and Kids Community Program is part of Centacare's range of early intervention programs. The African Dads and Kids Community Program address the specific needs of the African community in Melbourne, especially those who have recently arrived as refugees and humanitarian entrants.
Differences in parenting styles between Australian and African cultures
becomes evident upon arrival for many African families. Children and
young people are quick to learn the Australian ways of life. This often
presents a challenge to their parents, who as a result of lack of
English language and other skills find it hard to communicate with
their children. The African Dads and Kids Program is designed to
encourage healthy, open and respectful communication, which assists in
strengthening the parent child relationship.
